Lee Celebrates Burnaby’s Champions in Legislature

VICTORIA – Richard T. Lee, MLA for Burnaby North, rose in the legislature today to celebrate the recent accomplishments of young Burnaby athletes.

“Mr. Speaker, British Columbia produces a lot of outstanding athletes,” said Lee. “And I am proud to say that many of them come from Burnaby – perhaps most famously, Burnaby Joe Sakic.

“Athletes flourish in my city, and today I would like to recognize some of our champions for their perseverance and dedication.

“I would like to congratulate Michael Cai on the seven gold medals he won at the 2009 Canada Games, making him the most successful athlete in the Games’ history. I also want to applaud the accomplishments of Rebecca Alley for her gold medal in kayaking, and Kelsey Haberl for her outstanding play, which lead to a gold medal in softball at the Canada Games.

“Selina Ye is to be congratulated for the four gold medals she won at the B.C. Summer Swimming Championships,” said Lee.

“Earlier this summer, Mr. Speaker, young table tennis players from Burnaby also helped Team BC win the Canadian Junior Championships. Burnaby’s Shirley Fu, Teddy Wu, Paula Hsien, Peggy Hsien and Leanne Lee made us proud as they won six gold medals and helped Team BC win 13 of 28 gold medals in the tournament.

“Finally, I must also mention that Burnaby’s Matthew Woo, Anthony Cusati, Ryan Matsuda and Matteo Vincelli all made significant contributions as their Hastings All-Stars won the Canadian Little League championship and went on to represent Canada at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania,” said Lee.

“Mr. Speaker, I ask that the House please join me in congratulating these fine young athletes for their outstanding accomplishments.”
