MLA Lee Invites Legislature to Celebrate Lunar New Year

VICTORIA – Burnaby North MLA Richard T. Lee rose in the Legislature today to recognize the significance of the Lunar New Year celebrations and the 2010 Winter Olympics occurring at the same time this year.

“This month will be very exciting time for B.C. as we prepare to celebrate two great events,” said Lee. “The first begins on February 12th, and you may have heard of it: The Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. The second, Lunar New Year, begins just two days later on February 14th.

“Both of these events unite billions of people around the world in celebration. Every year in the Chinese calendar is associated with a different animal, and it is very interesting with the Olympics around the corner, that the approaching Lunar New Year will usher in the year of the Golden Tiger.

“The Tiger is associated with being active, seizing opportunities and reaching our highest potential, which is exactly what our fine Canadian athletes are about to do,” said Lee. “Tigers love to win and cannot pass up a challenge – a perfect description of our Olympians.

“Tigers seem calm, but their fire shows when they compete. And we shall see this cool calm from our athletes right up to the moment they show their fire in the heat of competition,” said Lee. “It is also interesting to note that the colours most important during Lunar New Year – red and gold – are also colours that we will see a lot during the Olympics.

“Red is the colour we use to show support for Canadian athletes. And, of course, gold is the colour of the medals that many of them will win in our drive to own the podium.

“In honour of these two great occasions, I say, ‘Gung hay fat choy,’ and ‘Go, Canada, Go!’ ” Lee concluded.
