| March 10, 2010 BURNABY DIGITAL MEDIA AND WIRELESS TECH ON THE LEADING EDGE VICTORIA – New tax rebates will allow Burnaby to continue to lead the way in the digital media and wireless industries, paving the way for job creation benefiting B.C’s economy, says Burnaby North MLA Richard T. Lee. “In B.C. today, the digital media and wireless industries are two of the fastest growing sectors in our economy,” Lee told the Legislature. “According to DigiBC, an association representing this sector, there are 1,300 companies in B.C. that employ 22,000 people and generate $3 billion a year in revenue.” The provincial government announced in the 2010 Budget that it will provide tax rebates for the digital media industry. B.C. holds a strong position in the North American media and entertainment industry and these rebates will assist it in maintaining its advantage over other regions. “The combined wireless and mobile, video gaming, animation and visual effects, web 2.0, social media, interactive marketing and e-learning sectors are an integral part of our high tech industry now,” said Lee. “In Burnaby, we have many industrial leaders including Electronic Arts, Canpages, Nokia, Darim, Snaptech Marketing Group, PVE400 as well as education institutes such as BCIT and SFU School of Engineering Science.” Recently the traditional media industry has welcomed the convergence of digital media and the opportunities it brings such as motion capture and interactive gaming. As the City of Burnaby has a very extensive network of media facilities, both traditional and digital, it is taking advantage of this convergence and attracting business from around the world. -30- | Select an area of government services from the drop-down list below for more information on how we may be able to assist you.
